Mikey has two big brothers and two little brothers. As the one in between he is neither big nor little. His great wish is to be counted as one of the big boys. When Father O'Grady and the older boys go to Boulder with a load of tanbark, he leaves Mikey in charge as the man of the house. It is Mikey's duty to chop wood, milk the cows, and watch out for the wounded grizzly bear that is known to be roaming the forest. The night the grizzly comes is a terrifying one, but Mikey proves his ability to look after the family. When Father says he's also old enough to help with cutting the tanbark, Mikey feels that as last he is one of the big boys and a real redwood pioneer. "
